Description:

Entire swaths of nation-states in North America, Europe, and other regions around the World are now coping with the legacies of industrial exploitation, facing de-industrialization and disinvestment, with the urgency of adapting to climate change. Governance practices characterized by neoliberalism have given rise to mixed patterns of support for sustainable practices. Examples of resistance to the dominant social paradigm of continued exploitation are organizations advocating alternative futures such as: social movements problematizing sacrifice zones; mutual aid organizations providing disaster response; and Indigenous communities working toward decolonized relationships with the natural world.

This series of sessions centers on papers that use these regions as a way to interrogate the dynamics of socio-ecological systems in our era, globally, inviting papers that highlight regional approaches to studying how patterns are being resisted and (re)produced in regions where industries have departed. The series of sessions includes a expert panel and is intended for researchers, stakeholders and Indigenous Rightsholders working on regions reinventing themselves in the context of global climate and related changes in communities. The discussions are facilitated by geographers of the OUTSTEPS.org Network, and will draw upon the United Nations Sustainability Goals.
