Abstract
Nature-based solutions (NbS) are the "new kid" in the development/conservation town. While the global perception of NbS is mainly positive, their little transformative potential and problematic assumptions and outcomes at the local level remain obscure. Based on previous research with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) on the social aspects of different nature-based solutions in Latin-American, this paper highlights that environmental justice is ethically desirable and instrumental to improving conservation effectiveness. This relation becomes more apparent as we illustrate how climate and environmental justice intersect and are embodied at the grassroots level and elucidate how transformative climate/biodiversity action is envisaged from the perspective of the interviewed IPLCs.
