Abstract
Water is an essential resource for tourism: from direct consumption (in-room water use) to irrigated gardens, swimming pools, and spas/wellness facilities to a wide range of leisure activities and landscaping. Numerous meta-analyses have contributed to this topic’s theoretical and empirical development. Scholarly studies on the water-tourism nexus can be classified into two main research lines. The first and the most productive line analyses water consumption by identifying the factors influencing guests’ water conservation behaviour. These studies mainly apply for socio-environmental indicators, integrate water sources and services, and recently calculate the tourism carbon footprint. The second line is water management, social justice, and innovation, including sustainable tourism certification, communication campaigns or interventions. However, a comprehensive review of characteristics, evolution, and validation of methods is yet to be undertaken. This contribution reviews how the research community addresses the water-tourism nexus from an integrative and participatory approach. Accordingly, the most up-to-date literature review on water-tourism nexus methods from a Mediterranean perspective and by the period 2000-2020 will be presented. This review seeks to answer four main research questions: (RQ1) Which methodological approaches have been designed to address the water-tourism nexus? (RQ2) Which paradigm(s) and key issues have been identified and conceptualized? (RQ3) Which is the intellectual structure, limitations and gaps of each of them? and (RQ4) Which new methods could contribute to improving methodological research?
