Description
Spatial representations and the imagination of space form what Lefebvre and Soja define as the conceived (mental) space. Appealing to Tuan’s idea of places as being socially constructed out of space by means of signification, we discuss multiple modes of symbolic construction of meaningful places.
We also try to explain how the multiplicity of meanings of these places influence community building and local identities. Thus we turn to the effects of spatial representations towards Soja’s ‘thirdspace’, that is the space as being lived and socially practiced, and towards local policies making use of place imageries.
