Abstract
In this paper we explore the concept of equity as it relates to infrastructures, both built and social, in the seafood sectors [capture, processing, aquaculture] in Canada. We aim to better understand how structural inequities have led to the exclusion of some people over others in rural coastal communities through past, present and imagined future infrastructures. We will examine, through a literature review of equity and critical infrastructures research, Canadian fisheries policies, as well as Federal equity policies, namely, GBA+, how these processes and practices challenge or reinforce systems of inequalities and oppression in the seafood sector in Canada, and shape our relations to both humans and animals. We conclude the paper with potential approaches to imagining alternative infrastructure designs that are inclusive, just and equitable models of animal – human relations.
