Abstract
The National Atlas of Korea was tentatively published by the National Geographic Information Institute in 1989 for internal use. The first edition of the National Atlas of Korea for public use was first published in a single book format in both Korean and English in 2007. Since 2014, the second edition was expanded to three volumes in both Korean and English. In addition, this edition also published a comprehensive edition in Korean, English, Spanish, and French. The third edition of the National Atlas of Korea has been published since 2019.
From 2024, the 4th edition of the National Atlas of Korea will be published. The 4th edition will have a different format from the previous editions. The 4th edition will consist of 10 volumes and adopt a thematic approach with an emphasis on regional geography. This study explains the structure, themes, and contents that the next atlas currently under discussion seeks to pursue.
In order to meet the current needs of a digital online map, the NGII plans to develop a new K-atlas system that can provide users with object-oriented services. In addition, the K-atlas system will develop dedicated open Application Programming Interface (API) tools running on a commercial platform. Upon developing a more interactive API, the K-atlas system will be a more user-friendly integrated national atlas system.
