Abstract
In recent years microbiologists have been able to shed light on the countless organisms that live inside and on the human body. Although the composition of this ecosystem is affected by a variety of different factors, food appears to have the highest observable impact. However, even though food is highly regional, thus geographic, few studies have attempted to use geography when considering the gut microbiome composition. What’s more, even fewer have attempted to discuss the multidimensional power structures that undoubtedly influence this ecosystem. Here, I illustrate that both geographers and microbiologists can benefit greatly from collaborating with one another, with special attention paid to political ecology of health and discussions surrounding scale.
