Abstract
Archives plays a crucial role in historical geography that can used to understanding the specific spatio-historical contexts. Although in Brazil, archival research poses some challenges as the fragmentation and partial periods of data for the colonial period. In this paper, we consider the archival research as a fieldwork to understand the Brazilian spatial organization in XVIII century. The most important collection is the Coleção Casa dos Contos de Ouro Preto (National Archives) that provides valuable material from which is possible to analyze the economic and the spatial relations between the coast, specifically the city of Rio de Janeiro and the outback (sertão) where the mineral production was concentrated in the colonial period. Thus, this paper examines the regional organization of late 18th century and by extension its cartographies. We recognize, from the fieldwork carried out in the archives, that this documentation is the one that best allows to contextualize the economic space in the period considered.
