Description:
Call for papers: Geographies of refugee resettlement
AAG Annual Meeting in New York City, NY, February 25 - March 1, 2022
Virtual Paper Session
Organizers: Lauren Fritzsche (University of Arizona) & Emily Frazier (Northwest Missouri State University)
In this call for papers, we seek to engage in dialogue with scholars working on contemporary issues in refugee resettlement. Currently, we are witnessing dramatic shifts in refugee policies and commitments in the Global North that reflect and shape a new geography of where and how people are (re)settling. Further, additional challenges such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and unfolding displacement crises overseas now provoke urgent questions about the emerging geographies of refugee resettlement.
We are interested in papers that explore the resettlement process and/or the experiences of refugees, immigrants, and receiving communities. In this session, we hope to engage in discussion that centers how characteristics of place and socio-economic, racial, and political histories intersect with processes and experiences of resettlement. We seek papers that address but are not limited to the following:
- The practices of refugee resettlement in non-traditional or new resettlement destinations
- The impacts of COVID-19 on resettlement services and infrastructures and on refugee and immigrant livelihoods
- The shifting national policies and debates around refugee resettlement and the associated impacts on local communities
- Everyday and embodied experiences of refugees and immigrants amid a shifting resettlement landscape
- Negotiations of belonging, inclusion and exclusion, race and racialization, and identity
- Place-based initiatives, histories, policies, infrastructures, and practices of refugee resettlement
- Contemporary dynamics in the shifting landscape of resettled populations, including the arrival of SIVs, humanitarian parolees, etc.
- Challenges and opportunities for the future of refugee resettlement
