Abstract
The emergence of food deserts and food swamps in American cities has attracted more attention while little is known what would be differing empirical evidence or policy implications for food system planning derived from the two concepts. Drawing upon the case of the Boise Metropolitan Area in the state of Idaho, we analyze changes in food environments in a rapidly urbanizing region of the American West. By applying GIS methods and statistical analysis, we particularly pay attention to the different applications of the notions of food deserts and food swamps at the intra-urban level. We will also address the policy implications for public transportation in the Boise Metropolitan area or the Treasure Valley.
