Description:
Because every real-world process and activity has a spatial and temporal footprint, the field of Geographic Information Science (GIScience) emerged as a discipline focused on the development of tools and techniques to conceptualize, represent, visualize and analyze geographic information to address real world problems pertaining to physical, natural and social systems. Yet, GIScience in 2022 has a different focus. The advancements in computing including GeoAI, information technology, satellite and portable sensors have not only enabled the use of spatial science and analytics to solve problems in different disciplines, the access to large volume of data at varying spatial and temporal scales has made it possible to undertake real-time analytics. On one hand, this allows researchers to develop trans-disciplinary solutions to a problem. By contrast, the easy access to high-resolution data, computing resources and tools contribute inadvertently to ethical issues, such as location privacy, and the reproducibility and replicability crisis. Furthermore, the discipline of Geography initially informed many of the approaches of GIScience on these issues, but the practices from other disciplines continue to shape current and future norms and practices. Nevertheless, many of the concepts and perspectives of the earliest developments of GIScience have remained of critical importance despite the emergence of new technologies.
With focus on building a resilient GIScience education and research that is also equitable, this panel will host speakers to discuss the past, present and future of GIScience. The focus is to understand the evolution of GIScience as a discipline in its own rights that has adapted theories and concepts from many disciplines including Geography.
